Abstract

This research aims to explore the methodological integration of reason (‘aql) and revelation (naql) in the Islamic jurisprudential process of istinbāṭ (deduction) and istikhraaj (derivation). The study investigates how classical and contemporary scholars have reconciled intellectual reasoning with textual evidences from the Qur’an and Sunnah when deriving legal rulings. It examines the foundational principles of uṣūl al-fiqh, the historical development of interpretive approaches among various madhāhib (schools of thought), and the balance between literalism and rational analogy. The research highlights that the harmonious application of intellect and revelation is not only permissible but essential for addressing new and complex legal issues in modern times. Furthermore, the study critiques the extremes of pure rationalism and blind literalism, arguing instead for a balanced approach rooted in both traditional texts and sound reasoning. This work contributes to the understanding of how juristic methodologies maintain fidelity to the divine sources while adapting to changing circumstances through reasoned analysis.
