Abstract

Satire in a literary term in the history of Urdu Literature. Today, the history of Urdu literature is incomplete without satire and humour. Satirist aims to reform society through his satirical writings and sometimes he uses humour to reduce the pungency of satire. In Urdu Literature, generally the difference between these two terms (satire and humour) is not considered, the purpose of humour is to create a new hope in our life, by making the bitter realities of life seem amusing. The use of satire and humour is found in different genres of literature, Other than Essay-writing.  Its' use is found in short story. The elements of humour and satire are, present in symbolic and abstractionistic short stories as well as in romantic and modern short stories symbol is a mode of expression. Keeping in view the changing times and accordingly its requirements new symbols have been invented, in past, like weas the same tool was used in different ages. Symbolism gained place in literature after the decline of socialism. In this article the elements of humour and satire in the work of symbolic and abstractionistic short story writers have been scrutinized. Through his stories, he has neither tried to ridicule anyone nor is his aim to ridicule. As a symbolic novelist, he has a lower level in satire. It happens that the purpose of satire is corrective in the way they seem to pay attention to the situation and routine of Karachi city in a satirical manner. No attempt to create. In a very subtle way, he has made the bitterness of life bearable and this is the main virtue of his satire.
