Abstract
Urdu poetry is commonly considered poetry of love and beauty. The fact is often ignored that Urdu poetry from the very beginning exhibits social issues, nationalism, the suffering of common people, and the deteriorating situation in the country. Urdu poetry remained rebellious and public-centric. Patriotic feelings in Urdu poetry touched a new height during colonization and the freedom struggle. After the partition, patriotic poets not only showed their love and compassion for the country but played a vital role in restoring democracy, freedom of speech, and building a welfare state.
Faiz Ahmad Faiz in his initial poetry adapted the theme of love and beauty but soon he turned away from the conventional poetry and he shifted to a broader subject that includes his country and people. Faiz is the epitome of patriotism and love for his people and country. He endured the suffering of imprisonment, expatriation, restriction, and every possible anguish and torture. But none of these tricks and punishments could deviate him from loving the country and countrymen. The paper is aimed to bring forth some salient features of Faiz’s patriotic poetry. Faiz expresses his love for the country as he does for his beloved. Given the unique Style and outstanding diction of the poetry, Faiz blended love, beauty, and realism in his poetry.
