Abstract
Ahmad Faraz [1931-2008] legend for his poetry in Urdu language on progressive themes with distinct traces of romanticism, had unique mastery over both major genres of Ghazal and Poem. Being a prolific and spontaneous poet depicting sensibilities of common person and those belonging to lower strata of society, the most striking feature of his poetry is diversity found in his themes and treatments. Islamic traditions and resultant human values are found in abundance in Faraz’s poetry. Besides, observance of Pashtun traditions is one of the core values of his themes. These very facts bring about a vast circle of admirers and fans from writers, poets, intellectuals, youth and almost all strata of social life, which he enjoyed in all stages of his active intellectual and creative life. It is evidenced that his poetry at one side entertained and nourished to the literary tastes of his time; and on other, he contributed positively in grooming of youth and their personalities. This short article is an attempt to categorize diverse themes and treatments found in Faraz poetry to identify the strengths as well as originality of his poetry. It is illustrated and analyzed that some dominant themes one could trace is his poetry are political commentary and analysis, voice against social injustice, socio-economic and socio-religious scrutiny, and indeed his strong voice for human rights and resistance against its violators
