Abstract

In this article after clarifying the literal and terminological meaning of marsiya, a brief overview of the tradition of Urdu marsiya has been presented. So far, only historical, literary, cultural and religious study of Urdu marsiya has been done, whereas, now the criticism has progressed, like other genres, it is necessary to study marsiya according to the post-modern method of critique in order to re-evaluate marsiya. In the course of this study, new conclusions can be drawn by adopting the method of reading and understanding in the literature of post-modernism’s features, neo-criticism, feminism, eco-criticism and post-colonialism. The details of all these possible outcomes are illustrated by the poetic examples of marsiya, which show that which method of post-modern study of Urdu marsiya is important, and how much will it strengthen the meaningful identity of Urdu critique and literature of marsiya. Also, it will be the first work of its kind.
