Abstract
The linguistic history of any language is always greater than its literary tradition. Language exists first, and then literature is created in that language. Punjabi language has a history spanning thousands of years, spoken and understood across a vast area. It is the language of 150 million people and ranks among the top ten most spoken languages globally. The literary tradition in Punjabi language originated in the 8th and 9th centuries AD with the poetry of Gorakh Nath, Haji Rattan, and Baba Farid. Hazrat Nausha Ganj Bakhsh was the first to use the word "Punjabi" in literature. Punjabi classical and Sufi poets played a significant role in shaping the literary tradition. Romantic tales, as well as jurisprudential, religious, and reformist literature, also hold a unique position in Punjabi literary tradition. Additionally, Punjabi newspapers and magazines contributed significantly to this tradition.
