Abstract

Dictionaries play a vital role in preserving and documenting languages. Arabic dictionaries are among the most important tools that have helped preserve and spread the Arabic language through the ages. The emergence of Arabic dictionaries began with the development of Islamic civilization and the need to interpret the Quran and Hadith, leading to the systematic and organized recording of the language.

Main Stages in the History of Arabic Lexicons:

  • The First Stage: The Emergence of Lexicons (2nd and 3rd Century AH)

  • The Second Stage: The Maturity of Lexicography (4th and 5th Century AH)

  • The Third Stage: The Expansion of Lexicons (6th to 10th Century AH)

  • The Fourth Stage: Modern Lexicons (20th Century and Beyond)

Arabic lexicons are among the most significant cultural and civilizational achievements in the history of the Arabic language. They have contributed to the preservation and development of the language. This science began with individual efforts, such as those of Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi, and evolved to include collective and institutional efforts in modern times. Studying the history of Arabic lexicons highlights the importance of this field and its vital role in preserving and enhancing the language.
