Abstract

This paper explores incidents of Quran desecration within Pakistan, particularly focusing on cases involving social media. The crime's nature, associated punishments, and measures for prevention are critically examined. An incident in Rawalpindi involved individuals accused of creating a WhatsApp group named "Frija 99920" linked to blasphemous groups, sharing offensive content about the Quran and religion. After thorough investigation, including WhatsApp forensics, the accused were sentenced. Islamic jurisprudence is clear on the severity of such acts. As stated by Imam Nawawi and Imam Ibn Taymiyyah, anyone who disrespects the Quran in any form is considered a disbeliever and subject to severe punishment, though only the government has the authority to enforce it. This paper also highlights a recent incident in Phoolnagar, District Kasur, where a Christian youth was arrested for blasphemy on social media. Despite the sensitivity of blasphemy in Pakistan and the historical instances of mob violence, these recent cases have not led to significant unrest. Human rights organizations and liberal circles continue to demand amendments to the blasphemy laws due to their misuse for personal vendettas. However, due to the influence of religious circles, progress has been slow. Government officials claim to be taking steps to prevent misuse. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legal, social, and religious implications of blasphemy against the Quran and to suggest potential measures for preventing such incidents and ensuring justice.
