Abstract

Professor Dr. Asif Jah Karwani had been a very prominent figure who initiated his literary journey as a student of linguistics and literature and had been into continuous endeavors for entire life as teacher, researcher, compiler and a government officer. He had served as a government teacher in Sindh and Punjab and had also rendered his services as principal. He had deeply researched on Iqbaliat and published in the magazines like "Shuaae Urdu" "Phuleli" and "Almeerwah". He did his remarkable work on Iqbal's philosophy of "Khudi" and wrote a book and several articles on this. In 1955, he did his PhD under the supervision of Dr. Aijaz Hussain Aijaz on "Iqbal's philosophy of "Khudi". He started his poetic journey with the pen-name of Karwan. He had also been the first chairperson of the Urdu Department at a historical institution of Hyderabad - Government College, Hyderabad established in 1917. And this institution has now been upgraded as the first university of Hyderabad as Government College University Hyderabad (GCUH).Dr.Karwani had also been at various government administrative posts. He spent the most of his life in Hyderabad, Sindh and passed away there. The personality of Dr. Asif Jah Karwani having several aspects to explore had been unknown to any literary works and neither his work had been under discussion in any literary gating's except his introduction. In this regard, this article in order to fill the dearth of his personality and work puts a little spotlight to discover his work and recognize his contribution accomplished in Urdu language and literature.
