Abstract

This article enlightens the impact of 1857's war of independence against British which was variously described and declared a revolt that resulted in oppression of Indian Muslims especially. This era was surely one of the darkest periods of Muslim history and it affected the community immensely. British termed this war as “mutiny” (Ghadar)  not only human lives were changed but Urdu literature, particularly novel, was greatly struck by the tragedy caused by this national dilemma. This predicament helped shaping the ideology of Urdu novel. As every dark cloud has a silver lining. This political muddle introduced a new idea to Urdu- Realism. Political and national mess of 1857 pushed Urdu novel to carve a new path for itself. This article briefly tells us about all the eras Urdu novel has faced since its emergence in 1869 by Nazir Ahmed. 1857's war of independence casted long lasting effects on Urdu literature and this tragedy surely nurtured the novel. Following article not only edifies about the destruction caused by this war but also discusses its impact on Urdu novel.
